This piece was inspired by a TED talk by author Leslie Morgan Steiner where she speaks about why victims of Abuse seldom leave. Recounting her own experience of abuse, she explains that one of the main reasons why victims never really leave is because they do not realize that they are being abused. She often thought of herself as a strong independent housewife who was deeply in love with a troubled man.

It is extremely vital to show abuse the light of day by talking about it with your children, your coworkers, your friends and family. Because in the end it doesn’t matter if someone is a relative, romantic interest, employer or a childhood friend; they shouldn’t make you feel like a worn out puppet, tethered to toxicity.
